Fairmont Kingdom - Backstory

Welcome to my Not So Medieval Kingdom Challenge - the fun challenge with a themed neighborhood with a royal family, nobility, merchants, and peasants/farmers.  But not everything is at it seems in this small, little kingdom!

The Kingdom of Fairmont was located high in the remote cliffs of the Far North Mountains.  Protected by rugged terrain that made travel dangerous, the kingdom had enjoyed a long-lasting peace under the Banner of Goodfellow.

A moon ago, King Alden Goodfellow III had fallen sick with a mysterious illness that doctors, healers and ecological gurus had been unable to heal.  Some whispered it was unnatural.

The Good King's beautiful daughter, Princess Aurora, was often found at his bedside caring for him and keeping him company.  His only son and heir, Prince Aamon, made no effort to hide his disdain.

Patrizio Aristo, the king's trusted friend and noble counselor, shook his head forlornly and told his daughter, "I think he only holds on to see his daughter safely wed once the snow has melted."  Princess Aurora was engaged to a prince of the lowlands and hopefully soon would be safe from her cruel brother.

Marie Mercer glanced around for eavesdroppers before she told her son the juicy gossip she'd overhead while ringing up an order.  "They say the Good King is as likely to die in his sleep as he is to die at his son's hand."

Not everyone was intrigued by the political goings-on in the kingdom.  Widower Sergio Serf barely had time to rest between tending the crops and caring for his sons. Whatever was going on at the castle was beyond his concern.

"Brother?" Princess Aurora asked with surprise when he barged in the door.  Prince Aamon ignored her sister's gasp and glared at his father.  "I've waited long enough," he declared. "Relinquish the throne!"

King Alden shook his head weakly.  "You are not fit to rule," he paused to cough. He should have changed the succession when he realized his son was rotten to the core.

"You leave me no choice," Prince Alden said firmly, then called out.  "ENTER!"

A strangely pale man dressed entirely in black glided into the room, followed by two younger individuals.

Count Vladimir De Sang strode to the king's bedside and quickly entranced the ailing king.

"What are you doing?" screamed Princess Aurora, jumping up from her chair to try to aid her gasping father.  "You're killing him!"

Prince Aamon watched dispassionately as his father drew his very last breath.  The pact with the creature was complete - he was promised power & wealth beyond his imagination in exchange for allowing entrance to the castle.

Princess Aurora bolted for the door.  "Grab her!" her brother called out and pointed.
